Earlier this evening, Sarah Palin announced her decision to forgo a run for the Presidency in 2012.

In her statement (via SarahPAC), the governor writes:

October 5, 2011
Wasilla, Alaska

After much prayer and serious consideration, I have decided that I will not be seeking the 2012 GOP nomination for President of the United States. As always, my family comes first and obviously Todd and I put great consideration into family life before making this decision. When we serve, we devote ourselves to God, family and country. My decision maintains this order.

My decision is based upon a review of what common sense Conservatives and Independents have accomplished, especially over the last year. I believe that at this time I can be more effective in a decisive role to help elect other true public servants to office - from the nation’s governors to Congressional seats and the Presidency. We need to continue to actively and aggressively help those who will stop the “fundamental transformation” of our nation and instead seek the restoration of our greatness, our goodness and our constitutional republic based on the rule of law.

From the bottom of my heart I thank those who have supported me and defended my record throughout the years, and encouraged me to run for President. Know that by working together we can bring this country back - and as I’ve always said, one doesn’t need a title to help do it.

I will continue driving the discussion for freedom and free markets, including in the race for President where our candidates must embrace immediate action toward energy independence through domestic resource developments of conventional energy sources, along with renewables. We must reduce tax burdens and onerous regulations that kill American industry, and our candidates must always push to minimize government to strengthen the economy and allow the private sector to create jobs.

Those will be our priorities so Americans can be confident that a smaller, smarter government that is truly of the people, by the people, and for the people can better serve this most exceptional nation.

In the coming weeks I will help coordinate strategies to assist in replacing the President, re-taking the Senate, and maintaining the House.

Thank you again for all your support. Let’s unite to restore this country!

God bless America.

- Sarah Palin

Though many of Sarah Palin’s supporters are - understandably - disappointed, it is clear from her words that Governor Palin plans to stay engaged, involved, and vocal for the 2012 election cycle and beyond.

Clearly, she understand what her voice has meant for the Conservative movement in this country. She has bolstered others to find their own voices and the courage to speak out in the face of unprecedented challenges to the very structure of our political system.

As Sarah Palin has asserted, almost since the day after the 2008 elections: This is not the time “sit down” or “shut up”. Rather, now is the time to redouble our efforts in support of those candidates and non-title-holders who are willing to step forward in the name of service.

This is the time to restore America together.

Both women express their opinions that Governor Palin should “fish or cut bait”, rather than continuing to “tease” her supporters (and the media) as she continues to say that she is considering running for president in 2012.

From Tammy’s website:

I felt it an important show to release to the public considering the ramped up attacks on Tea Party in general by the left and Obama’s gestapos, plus now attacks on Sarah Palin’s supporters by some of our friends on the right. I wanted to make sure we had perspective about this strategy, hopefully helping us stay focused as these attacks will only increase as we proceed.

The first hour is focused on this issue, with the Laura Ingraham/Ann Coulter discussion on O’Reilly last night as the focal point. I hope you find it helpful, interesting and perhaps even enjoyable :)

As always, Tammy lays it all out with her usual passion and straightforward talk. Enjoy!

While many of us were probably spending our Saturday afternoon sun-bathing, strolling farmer’s markets, or hiking in the great outdoors, Governor Palin was apparently busy dissecting the failed economic policies of the Obama administration.

Again.

To whet your appetite, here’s a brief excerpt from today’s note:

The same “experts” who got us into this mess are now telling us that the only way out of our debt crisis is to “increase revenue,” but not by creating more jobs and therefore a larger tax base; no, they want to “increase revenue” by raising taxes on job creators who are taxed enough already! As Margaret Thatcher said, “The trouble with socialism is that eventually you run out of other people’s money.” That’s where we are now. Hard working taxpayers have been big government’s Sugar Daddy for far too long, and now we’re out of sugar. We don’t want big government, we can’t afford it, and we are unwilling to pay for it.

This debt ceiling debate is the perfect time to do what must be done. We must cut. Yes, I’m for a balanced budget amendment and for enforceable spending caps. But first and foremost we must cut spending, not “strike a deal” that allows politicians to raise more debt! See, Washington is addicted to OPM – Other People’s Money. And like any junkie, they will lie, steal, and cheat to fund their addiction. We must cut them off and cut government down to size.

To paraphrase Hemingway, people go broke slowly and then all at once. We’ve been slowly going broke for years, but now it’s happening all at once as the world’s capital markets are demanding action from us, yet Obama assumes we’ll just go borrow another cup of sugar from some increasingly impatient neighbor. We cannot knock on anyone’s door anymore. And we don’t have any time to wait for Washington to start behaving responsibly. We’ll be Greece before these D.C. politicians’ false promises are over. We must force government to live within its means, just as every business and household does.

Needless to say, I highly suggest you read the entire post on Facebook. It’s particularly hard-hitting and, per the governor’s trademark, quite common-sensical.

Then, when your interest is thoroughly piqued - “I wonder what type of governor she really was…?” - proceed immediately to pre-purchase tickets for The Undefeated film.
- July 1, 2011 -

Last night, I was fortunate enough to see the “rough cut” version of the film The Undefeated. The movie officially opens on July 15th in select cities across the country (click here to see scheduled showings).

The Undefeated chronicles Sarah Palin’s journey of leadership from her days on the Wasilla City Council, through her abridged - yet extremely productive - gubernatorial term, and into her most recent role as a national Conservative leader.

THE FILM

As someone who did her homework when Governor Palin was selected to run with Senator McCain in 2008, I considered myself quite familiar with her record of achievement in Alaska. She tackled big issues that her predecessors avoided, and she was unabashedly prone to challenging the “status quo” in the name of bettering the lives of her constituents.

These unique (for a politician, anyway) traits are what led me to evolve my opinion of the governor, considering her more than a gifted communicator - she also gets things done.

Despite this background information, however, The Undefeated enabled me to see Governor Palin with new eyes. Though I was well-versed in many of the details of her political career, it was considerably more powerful to hear multiple, detailed interviews with other members of the Palin administration.

The litany of observations offered from those on the inside of Palin’s team revealed her to be a strong leader, devoted to Alaska’s citizens and the state’s future. In story after story, the picture of Governor Palin became clear: she has a servant’s heart and a lion’s will. Whatever the personal or political costs, she won’t back down and she won’t retreat from a course she feels is right.

JULY 15TH

The Undefeated officially opens in theaters across the United States on July 15th, 2011. If the reaction of tonight’s audience is any indication, this independently financed documentary is poised to make a strong impact with viewers.

I do not exaggerate when I say that people who walk into the theater with skepticism about Sarah Palin’s capacity to achieve higher office may very well walk out asking, “When is she going to announce?” and “How can I help?”.

Between now and the 15th, I hope that each of you will extend an invitation to your circle of friends and acquaintances to join you in seeing this film.

Sarah Palin has been mocked and vilified like no other politician in modern history. The unique circumstances in which she has found herself since 2008 have necessitated a unique approach to the telling of her story. Most political figures don’t have a feature-length film in their arsenal of story-telling tools.

But, Sarah Palin isn’t “most political figures.”

Whether you love her, or hate her; or, dismiss her as inconsequential, The Undefeated will give you unprecedented insight into the events and issues that shaped Sarah Palin into the Conservative firebrand she is today.

After July 15th, there will be no excuse for anyone to plead ignorance about Sarah Palin’s record. The only question that will matter is: Now that I have this knowledge, what am I going to do with it?

One of the sad and dangerous signs of our times is how many people are enthralled by words, without bothering to look at the realities behind those words.

One of those words that many people seldom look behind is “education.” But education can cover anything from courses on nuclear physics to courses on baton twirling….

- Thomas Sowell, Real Clear Politics (May 10, 2011)

The average American voter today is regularly treated to shallow news reporting and unquestioning “puff pieces” that neither require nor inspire critical thinking.

Words are spoken. Stories are read. And here we sit, taking it all in.

In a new article titled The ‘Education’ Mantra, posted in Real Clear Politics, Thomas Sowell traces this passivity to what has become the norm in many of our country’s colleges and universities: an emphasis on “soft” education, rather than more serious subjects that groom students to become more - not less - productive in society.

In reading this article, you’ll see that, once again, Sowell has written a salient and thoughtful editorial that is worth sharing far and wide - readily addressing the impact of these curricular changes in higher education in the United States and across the world.

An excerpt from The ‘Education’ Mantra:

Many Third World countries have turned out so many people with diplomas, but without meaningful skills, that “the educated unemployed” became a cliche among people who study such countries. This has not only become a personal problem for those individuals who have been educated, or half-educated, without acquiring any ability to fulfill their rising expectations, it has become a major economic and political problem for these countries.

Such people have proven to be ideal targets for demagogues promoting polarization and strife. We in the United States are still in the early stages of that process. But you need only visit campuses where whole departments feature soft courses preaching a sense of victimhood and resentment, and see the consequences in racial and ethnic polarization on campus.

There are too many other soft courses that allow students to spend years in college without becoming educated in any real sense.

We don’t need more government “investment” to produce more of such “education.” Lofty words like “investment” should not blind us to the ugly reality of political porkbarrel spending.

Thomas Sowell is one this country’s most brilliant - and logical - economic minds. His ability to link political policy with “kitchen table” issues like commodity pricing, social relations, and, yes, education, is simply unparalleled.

Indeed, it might go a long way toward re-instituting “hard” education if Sowell’s body of work were among required reading in the core curriculum of every university. As it is, anyone who’s serious about understanding the holistic impact of economic policy in our society would do well to follow Mr. Sowell’s writings.

There are several articles out this weekend discussing the policies of Ben Bernacke and the The Federal Reserve. All of this is in anticipation of Bernacke’s press conference this coming week - on Wednesday.

One the most comprehensive articles is posted at Business Insider, authored by Dian L. Chu.

An excerpt from Why The Fed Must End QE2 On April 27th:

When Transitory Turns Self-Fulfilling

The problem for the Fed is that this goes beyond current inflationary effects in the economy, but future expectations of inflation in the economy. And none of these are transitory in nature once they get embedded in the psyche of investors and consumers. The only way they were doused in 2008 when they were at these exact levels was a near historic crash in the financial and housing markets.

Absent of some similarly extreme deflationary event, inflation and expectations of inflation are only going to feed on themselves and become even more firmly entrenched in the economy, negatively reinforcing investors and consumer’s asset allocation and spending habits.

This all becomes self fulfilling in nature, and the real nasty part about inflation is if you don`t head it off early, once it gets even a little momentum, it becomes much more difficult to control and manage. This is where the fed is right now; they are at the cusp of losing control of their handle on inflation with their incredibly dovish stance towards inflation.

Read the entire article at Business Insider…

In addition to this, the NY Sun has posted an editorial piece asking how it is that Sarah Palin was able to predict the ineffectiveness of the Fed’s policies - particularly QE2. That article is titled Sarah Palin for the Fed? and is well-worth a read.

All of these articles point to less-than-ideal economic conditions for the United States in the future - unless someone at the Fed begins to accept the reality of our current situation.

We can only hope…

LOVE

As many of you may know, I traveled waaaay up north to Alaska last summer, to visit this intriguing state and work on a political campaign for a couple of weeks.

Without a doubt, the most precious blessing of my stay in Alaska was meeting, for the first time, wonderful people I had previously only known via text messages, stories, and the occasional Facebook post. From that time on, I have come to consider these warm families - and “colorful” personalities - the dearest of friends.

Now, due to an unfortunate accident, one of those families is in need of our help.

HOPE

Shelby, 13 years old (who is pictured above on the right), was out sledding this past weekend on a popular hill, not far from her Wasilla home. Unfortunately, one of her runs down the slope went awry and she collided with a tree in her path. The angle and force of the collision resulted in a severe spinal injury and internal bruising.

After three painful days in the hospital, doctors were finally able to perform the necessary surgery to repair Shelby’s spine. Miraculously, her spinal cord was intact and there is hope for her full recovery.

However, Shelby remains in the hospital and her rehabilitation will be a long and expensive road. So, this family - who are beloved, cherished members of the Wasilla community - cannot do all of this alone.

FAITH

They need our prayers and they need our donations. If you are able to offer just one or both of these necessities, know that your generosity is very much appreciated.

Alaska is a place where neighbors take care of neighbors, and communities stick together. I hope that you will take this opportunity to join the community of support across the country for one of Wasilla’s youngest warriors as she makes her way back to health.

How you can help:

Donations can be made directly here

Leave your prayers and comments at the Friends of Shelby Facebook page

Share this story with your friends on Twitter and Facebook - the more prayers the better!

A few minutes ago, Mr. Carlson apologized for his language last night. Via Twitter:

At this point, there’s not much more to say, except - Thank you, Mr. Carlson! I’m happy that this episode has ended on a positive - and mature - note.

- tdc

Generally speaking, I have nothing against Tucker Carlson.

He founded the Daily Caller website, which I read regularly, and seems to be a pretty good political analyst. That said, I was pretty shocked to see a tweet from him this evening in which he used the term “MILF” (if you don’t know what it is, Google it) in reference to Governor Sarah Palin.

The story Carlson was referencing was a CNN write-up about the former governor’s poll numbers in Iowa. It was all perfectly fine until you got to the end of Mr. Carlson’s tweet and saw the word “Milfistan”. The original tweet has been deleted, but I managed a screen cap of a couple of retweets and responses (the second one is my own):

I assume he was trying to be funny, but it just ended up being rude.

Using that unfortunate term about any woman is simply tasteless, and I would expect more from someone like Tucker Carlson. I’m not calling for him to make some grand apology to Governor Palin, or the Twitterverse, for that matter. But, since the original tweet was deleted, someone must have clued him in.

Thus, it would be nice if he acknowledged his lack of judgment in referencing a word that only boys - not men - find appropriate (or, in Opposite Land, somehow complementary).

More importantly, the reason I am even bothering to write this post is to call attention to the fact that we should all be mindful of the language we use. Hyper-sensitivity is never a good thing, but when someone like Governor Palin (or Michele Bachmann) has been routinely objectified as a means of diminishing her political and governing skills, it’s important to speak up and point out what a slippery slope we’re on.

If you *must* use locker room language, save it for the locker room. Don’t display your inner-most Neanderthal to your 23,000+ Twitter followers - some of whom will take the opportunity to offer their own crass retort. Surely, we can expect more from you, Mr. Carlson - can’t we?

This audio clip is one of the first by a national talk radio host who very nearly endorses Governor Palin for president. He says Palin is “the perfect candidate” who “connects with millions of people” and drives the Left crazy.

Further, Gallagher makes the important point that those of us on the Right should not make the mistake of making her “failure” a self-fulfilling prophecy. Palin, in Gallagher’s view has the charisma, strength, and experience to win against Barack Obama.

This is a great clip and Gallagher lays out a passionate case in support of Governor Palin’s qualifications to be the next president of the United States.

“It’s time for us to stand up for somebody like Sarah Palin.”

Today’s Gallup poll for likely 2012 GOP presidential candidates reveals a close race between Governors Mike Huckabee, Mitt Romney, and Sarah Palin. The poll was conducted with Republicans and “Republican-leaning” Independent voters and asked which candidate the voter would be “most likely” to support.

It’s interesting to note the shift that has occurred in recent months, as indicated in the chart below:

You will see that Huckabee’s numbers have increased 4% since the fall of 2010, perhaps due to his recently released book, Simple Government: Twelve Things We Really Need From Washington; while Mitt Romney’s numbers have decreased by a similar amount, 3%, in that same time period. By contrast, Governor Palin’s numbers have maintained a steady trend since last September - a remarkable feat considering the constant barrage of negative press directed her way. The latest, of course, being the leaked manuscript by a former aide (blogger Stacy Drake has a straight-forward post on this matter at Big Government).

Though daily and weekly polls are nothing to hang one’s proverbial hat on, reviewing the trends revealed in these statistics can be useful for understanding the mood of the average voter. Poll numbers can certainly be illustrative in pointing out preferred candidates and those with the highest name-recognition. However, these numbers are also instructive in revealing falsehoods (or wishful thinking) that are simply not the reality of the situation.

In the case of Governor Sarah Palin, the prevailing meme in mainstream press is that she is polarizing, disliked, and disrespected. This week’s Gallup poll, however, shows a different trend. Despite the efforts of those who would banish her from the political scene, Governor Palin remains a strong, steady presence - she manages to persevere in the face of extraordinary odds.

Regardless of who enters the race to become the GOP presidential candidate in 2012, the numbers released by Gallup today should be a reminder that this election will not be a foregone conclusion - in the primary or the general election.

Voters’ opinions are fickle and the majority of Americans don’t pay much attention to politics outside of a few weeks before a major election. The most important thing for conservatives to do between now and November 2012 is to remain strong and steady, continuing to persevere through the blitz that is sure to come from the other side.

As this coming Monday is President’s Day, The National Review Online has published an article titled “A Great and Mighty President”. The article features the commentary of three historians who discuss the nature of the American presidency and the men who have held the office.

Each president has left his mark on the office, but the NRO story points to several who were particularly influential in shaping the scope and responsibility of the presidency. While noting the contributions of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, and Teddy Roosevelt, the author, Brian Bolduc, notes the impact of one modern president - Ronald Reagan.

Mr. Bolduc writes:

“The most obvious and dramatic effect of his inauguration was the restoration overnight — it really was overnight — of American self-confidence and patriotism,” Morris argues. “It’s one thing he and TR had in common: It was a personal dignity and they embodied the national dignity as well as its force.”

The other quality Morris emphasizes is Reagan’s courage. “Before him, every president seemed to be scared of the Soviet Union — terrified of it,” he says. “Reagan seemed to instinctively understand that it was a ramshackle system, a house of cards that just had to be tipped over and then it would crumble.”

Reagan was the last president who strengthened the office, Morris says: “Clinton was much more accommodating with Congress and the latest Bush was much more controversial. But Reagan somehow managed to hold it all together.”

In a time when the world is as unstable a place as it has ever been, one can’t help but hope that our next president is, once again, an individual who displays that Reagan-esque sense of self-confidence (not to be construed as conceit) that simultaneously embodies our “national dignity as well as its force.”

Indeed, perhaps it is appropriate that we ask whether one can exist without the other.

February 12, 2011 - Representative Allen West (FL) delivers the conference keynote address

In what was largely viewed as a brilliant move, CPAC organizers invited freshman congressman Allen West to deliver the final keynote speech for the event. West has fast become one of the most well-liked, well-respected Conservative voices to come out of the Tea Party movement that swept through the country in the two years following President Obama’s election.

As is his trademark, Allen West delivered straightforward, articulate speech that energized the crowd and inspired them - indeed, all of us who watched - to continue to hold fast to their principles. As The Right Scoop succinctly pointed out, West’s address focused on three foundational tenets of Conservatism: “effective and efficient constitutional government, peace through strength, and staying true to our American values.”

Representative West’s speech was a fitting end to the CPAC weekend and continued the tradition of featuring one of the strongest Conservative voices of our time.

February 11, 2011 - Potential 2012...

*CPAC 2011 Highlights*

February 11, 2011 - Potential 2012 Presidential candidate, Herman Cain addresses CPAC 2011

This year’s CPAC event in Washington, D.C. was once again a showcase of the best of the Conservative political scene. The conference is a deliberate mix of elected officials, policy wonks, dedicated activists, media personalities, and beloved Conservative superstars. Now that it has ended, there are a couple of presentations worth sharing far and wide…

The first one, posted above, was one of the most engaging speeches of the weekend - by Herman Cain. This was certainly one of the highlights of the conference and is worth watching…and re-watching. He has an engaging presence and is a strong voice for Conservatism. President Obama may be a so-called orator but Mr. Cain is a communicator.

Enjoy!

The governor once mentioned in an interview (via Runner’s World Magazine) that for special days, one of her preferred activities was simply to be left alone to go for a run through town. So, in her honor, I’ve posted the photo above. Though the current weather in Wasilla (according to my iTouch) is a balmy 18-degrees, let’s hope she is able to get out for that birthday run.

For your part, if you’ve been looking for the perfect present for Governor Palin, head over to SarahPAC to offer a donation for her tireless efforts; or go sign up to be a part of the team at Organize 4 Palin. O4P is not officially affiliated with the governor, but they are about as dedicated a group as you’ll find.

Finally, the aforementioned Runner’s World article included a quote that seems apropos for our current political climate - in the midst of all the pre-2012 talk.

A little food for thought…

What about in a race? Could you beat the president?
I betcha I’d have more endurance. My one claim to fame in my own little internal running circle is a sub-four marathon. It wasn’t necessarily a good running time, but it proves I have the endurance within me to at least gut it out and that is something. If you ever talk to my old coaches, they’d tell you, too. What I lacked in physical strength or skill I made up for in determination and endurance. So if it were a long race that required a lot of endurance, I’d win.
